2004 Syrah - Santa Ynez Valley, Alisos Vineyard

The wine we produce from the Syrah grapes grown at Alisos Vineyard, east of Los Alamos never fails to impress us with its distinctive character and outstanding quality.  We are very pleased to release this exceptional Syrah.

The grapes were harvested in late September at a ripe 26 degrees Brix sugar level. We followed our usual practice of total destemming and gentle crushing of the grapes into small open top fermenters.  Fermentation lasted for nearly three weeks after which the must was pressed off to a settling tank.  The wine was then transferred to oak barrels for a sixteen month aging period.  The new oak component was reduced to around 20% to allow the unique vineyard and varietal character to come through.

This year’s Syrah has the same very dark color as previous vintages.  The aromas are of black licorice, plums and raspberries.  On the palate, the wine initially has a deceptive medium weight but after a few seconds it expands to reveal lush flavors, and silky smooth tannins.  This vintage is less tannic than the 2003 bottling and has a slightly riper character to the fruit.  Serve with wild game, roast pork and seasoned grilled meats.
