2005 Hoo Doo Red - Red Wine , Santa Barbara County

Every year, after we have made the blending decisions for our Evidence, Blues Cuvee and Syrah, we discover whether or not this vintage will bring us a bottling of our Hoo Doo Red. When we have surplus wine, we use it as the core of this blend and then add a little of this and that to refine it and create the best possible blend.

In 2005, the main components were Merlot from Westerly Vineyard and Syrah from Clover Creek Vineyard. After a series of trial blending sessions over a six month period, I decided to add Malbec, Viognier and a small quantity of Grenache.

The wine has a deep, dark ruby color. The aromas are complex and ever changing. It may take a few sniffs to detect the slightly herbal aromas from the Merlot, a leather-type aroma from the Syrah, and floral notes from the Malbec, Grenache and Viognier. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied with rich, fruit flavors. There is a pleasing balance of mild tannins and soft flavors. The finish is very complex with a hint of toasted oak. We feel this will be a great “house” wine for everyday casual enjoyment at a great price. This wine will pair well with grilled sausages, steaks and vegetables.
